Lori Davis (00:03): “Sometimes as an adult, it’s easy for us to think that a bike is just a toy. But it is not. It is so much more than that.”
Jessica Matsik (00:10): “A bike can positively affect a child’s confidence, letting themselves know that they can do hard things.”
Jason Greenawalt (00:17): “So this is a really fun event that we do every year in all of our offices, where we’re working together to build bikes that we then go and give away at a Title I elementary school.”
Lori Davis (00:28): “Wish for Wheels is a nonprofit 501(c)(3), and we partner with companies and organizations all across the country to give new bikes and helmets to second graders. Since 2018, we’ve partnered with Nakupuna Companies to give new bikes and helmets to over 2,600 2nd graders in ten different communities across the country. 1,100 of those kids and families are right here in Hawai‘i.”
Jason Greenawalt (00:55): “The Nakupuna Companies exist to support the economic advancement of Native Hawaiians. That is the core reason that we exist as a business. The schools that we have chosen to partner with, they have a high population of Native Hawaiians in those schools. Many of the schools that we go into, this is the only bike that this child has had before. It’s the first time that they’ve received a bike.”
Unknown (01:17): “You have a free bike today you get to take home. Yay!”
Jason Greenawalt (01:22): “When you see the joy on a child’s face, after helping a child 20 minutes and now all of a sudden they’re riding a bike on their own, you want to talk about a sense of freedom.”
Lindsay Ah Loo (01:31): “One of the reasons we invest in Wish for Wheels specifically for our employees as part of our engagement program, is it really gives our employees a chance to connect with purpose and creating meaningful impact through their work. We have over 50 employees who sign up every year to assemble the bikes and work together as part of a team building activity. And they come on the weekend, so this is all volunteer time. And they love putting their heart into that work and building these bikes.”
Earl Luczon (01:59): “To see a company do that and not just focused on the business is very rewarding for myself and for my family. Taking a break from the work, and giving back to the community is a whole ‘nother experience. To show and have my kids help has benefited in their growth. Not receiving a bike but learning about giving. The first year they were very excited and we’ve done it every year since.”
Jessica Matsik (02:25): “It’s really a true partnership and it really feels like we’re in this together. Students feel seen, sense of joy and purpose, and it also reminds them that the community supports them and cares for them.”
Dafne (02:37): “We are very grateful and thankful for this program, because it helps a lot of people who are not fortunate to afford one.”
Kaui (02:45): “To just see the smiles on their face is the best feeling that a mom can have.”
Remilyn (02:51): “She know how to ride the little scooter, but she really wanted the bike. Last night, she couldn’t sleep very well because she said, ‘mom I’m so excited for that!’ My son, he took a bike last year.”
Unknown (03:05): “Now he know how to ride a bike. And he just played around, around our neighborhood. And he is really like independent saying that ‘mom, I did it.’”
Jessica Matsik (03:15): “Years from now, I hope they look back on this day and remember this time in school they really felt supported, cared for, and loved by many people.”
Kaui (03:26): “Are you excited? You got a new bike? Yeah.”
Student Group (03:28): “Thank you!”
